Kendal & the Lyth Valley

Perfectly positioned between the borders of the National Park and Lake Windermere, the stunning Lyth Valley stretches for miles and is home to a fantastic choice of countryside walking, Lakeland pubs and beautiful holiday homes. This area sees much less visitor traffic than its popular neighbor making it a real hidden gem.

Kendal is the gateway to the Lake District and one of the largest towns in the county. An old traditional Cumbrian market town, Kendal has great shopping, a huge choice of attractions including museums, cinema, bars, restaurants, a castle and parks plus convenient transport connections along the west-coast mainline. Kendal is well known for its variety of shopping and performing arts shows which can be seen at the Brewery Arts Centre and other local venues.

If you’re a lover of country pubs and great Cumbrian ale, then there are many fantastic little spots to add to your holiday bucket list. The Punch Bowl at Crosthwaite, The Black Labrador and The Wheatsheaf Inn all serve hearty and delicious meals all year round so if you don’t fancy cooking back at your cottage, head to any of these pubs for a taste of local Cumbrian produce at its finest.

Head to Sizergh Castle and its accompanying farm shop for a walk around the grounds and a bite to eat. Maintained by the National Trust, this sprawling country estate welcomes many visitors and is particularly breath-taking during the autumn months as its woodlands turn golden. Pick up some locally grown produce at the farm shop here to rustle up a feast back at your holiday home.

The Lyth valley is littered with tiny hamlets and country pubs around every corner alongside some fantastic walking including Scout Scar, a walk following a ridge overlooking the entire valley with a pub at one end and a handy car park at the other.
